Day Camp 4 Developers

What if you could learn to be a better speaker in a just a few hours? Wouldn’t that be great? That’s what happened today. This morning was Day Camp for Developers(DC4D), an event put on by the esteemed Cal Evans and Kathy Evans, of Nomad PHP fame. Each Day Camp is an online event, focused on a single topic; this morning’s was Speaking for Developers II. These are the talks I got to see today.

  • An Actor’s Take on Public Speaking, Josh Holmes, @joshholmes
  • Timeline for a Talk, Emma Jane Westby, @emmajanehw
  • Finding Your Voice, Samantha Quiñones, @ieatkillerbees
  • Exploiting the Brain for Fun & Profit, Alena Holligan, @sketchings
  • The Indispensable Every Company Must Have, Jon Shearer, @jonshearer

This was the first DC4D I attended. I really enjoyed it. It’s basically a mini conference, without the keynotes and the traveling. While 7am PST is a little too early for me, at least it’s online and you can attend from the comfort of your own home. While the event is running, the attendees chat with one another using IRC. The organizers and speakers are also using it. While not everyone may be chatting, everyone in the room is at least “listening” IRC takes a little getting used to, but it’s pretty effective.

There are a lot of things that you can enjoy. However, the difference between something good and something great is the answer to a single question — would you do it again? In the case of Day Camp for Developers, yes I would.
